Associate Lighting Designer
"She Wolf" University of California Santa Barbara 2023
Director: Risa Brainin Lighting Designer: Michael Klaers
I started this process programming cues, managing paperwork, and coordinating with the design team. However, towards the end of tech, the lighting designer got covid, leading me to jump in as the acting lighting designer. As this was a new play from a playwright-in-residence, there were a number of changes to the show during its tech and run. I built new cues for newly added scenes and adapted existing cues in response to revisions in blocking, all while working closely with the lighting designer, director, and playwright to create a seamless transition and maintain a consistent design vision.
Projection Designer
"Indecision" as part of "Kinetic Lab" University of California Santa Barbara 2024
Director: Christina McCarthy Choreographer: Corinne Dummel
My biggest task in this project was to find a visual language for a piece as it was still being created. Working closely with the choreographer through meetings, tests in rehearsals, experimentation, and iteration, we settled on the idea of particles as elements of chaos, swirling and scrambling in interconnected and erratic ways, extensions of the movement of dancers, who in turn act as extensions of a person's thoughts. Their changes in connectivity, linearity, and explosiveness highlighted the storytelling in the abstract piece. I created these visuals in TouchDesigner, building and editing video content into a finished product with After Effects and QLab.
Associate Lighting Designer
"Everybody's Favorite Mothers" University of California Santa Barbara 2024
Director: Risa Brainin Lighting Designer: Michael Klaers
As a designer for a new work, I had the pleasure of being on the production team from the beginning to shape the world of this developing show. I helped create the light plot, assisted with the focus, and, under the supervision of the lead designer, conceptualized and programmed (ETC Ion) cues for a majority of the show. I worked closely with the designer to adapt to developments in the script and dramaturgy, as well as tackled technological problems. For example, when we had a major hardware malfunction with the moving lights partway through the run, I lept in to rapidly re-program a number of moments in the show that would be significantly affected to ensure they worked at a functional and aesthetic level despite the loss of fixtures.
Projection Designer
"Starmites" California Lutheran University 2024
Director: Brent Ramirez
After having designed "Roe" for CLU in 2022, I was invited back to create projections for their spring musical, "Starmites". The show was a vibrant journey through sci-fi comic book adventures, and they wanted projections to bring the stage to life and provide some key special effects. I created content in Photoshop and After Effects, then put it all together in QLab, tackling a variety of technical hurdles along the way in building an ambitious multi-projector set-up. My favorite part of the experience was working with the director to explore how actors can interact with the projections to extend what's possible on stage.
